Airstair · wall-mounted drying rack · $59
Out for laundry day. Flat the rest of the week. One inch off the wall.
Airstair is a wall-mounted drying rack with four steel rails that climb up and out like stairs, so every towel, sweater and pair of leggings hangs in its own air. When the load is dry, lift the rails a quarter inch and swing it shut.

Why it steps
Every piece hangs in its own air.
On a flat rack, the towel on the front rail drapes over the shirt behind it and both stay damp. Airstair's rails rise like a staircase: each one sits about 1⅞″ farther out and 1¾″ higher than the rail below it.
Each drape gets its own column of air, a little over an inch and a half from the next, and the top rail is the one closest to you.
Side view, to scale. Colored strokes are cloth draped over each rail.
How it folds
One swing out. One swing back.
The two brackets and four rails form a parallelogram, so the whole rack moves together. The rails stay parallel to the wall the entire way.
Top view · drag to fold
- Pull it open. Both brackets swing out together and the rails slide forward, still parallel to the wall.
- Let it settle. At 90° it drops ¼″ into a lock hidden in the lower wall block. Load it up.
- Lift and swing back.Raise the rails ¼″ off the lock and push. It folds flat, about 1″ from the wall.

FAQ
Before you drill.
Do I need wall studs?
Yes. The two hinges sit 16″ apart so each one lands on a stud in a standard wall. Hang it on studs, not drywall anchors: a full load of wet towels is heavy.
How high should I hang it?
Put the lowest rail around shoulder height so the top rail is easy to reach. Above a washer and dryer, leave at least 18″ over the machines so the lids and your hands have room.
What tools do I need?
A stud finder, a drill with a ⅛″ bit for pilot holes, a Phillips screwdriver and a level.
How does the lock work?
When the rack reaches 90°, a tab under each bracket drops ¼″ into a pocket in the lower wall block, so it can't swing shut while it's loaded. Lift the rails ¼″ to release it.
Will it fit above my machines?
It reaches 9″ out from the wall, well inside the 27″ to 33″ depth of most washers and dryers, and it's 13⅜″ tall. Folded, it's 29⅝″ wide.
Why is it wider when folded?
The rails stay parallel to the wall the whole time, so as the brackets fold flat the rails slide about 5½″ sideways. Leave about 30″ of clear wall.
